Confidentiality Patient confidentiality is always maintained for psychiatric patients. This means that no one will receive information about a patient without appropriate consent of the patient or guardian. The only exceptions to this are if there is a strong concern that someone may be in danger or to report suspected abuse or specific infections as required by law. (See Abuse on this website.) At the Taylor Health System this means that we will not even acknowledge that someone is a patient at the Hospital unless we can be certain that we have a valid release for the caller; if we are not sure or do not have the required release, we will tell the caller that we will take a message and if appropriate someone may call back later. This protects the patient’s right to confidentiality. Records of the patient’s stay are not released without permission. Generally the Health System will ask for permission to contact past and future care providers to ensure continuity of care. While treatment providers cannot give information without a release, they can receive information about a potential patient from others in the community. Visitors and patients are asked to respect the privacy of others who they may see on the healthcare campus, just as they would want their confidentiality maintained. Likewise patients and families who participate in group therapies are expected to respect the privacy of the therapy session.
